"Impossible," Maya breathed, staring at the competing plans. She slammed her planner shut, the sound echoing unnaturally loud in the quiet kitchen. Her jaw clenched, and she could feel a tremor starting in her legs. She imagined the two parties, two conflicting realities vying for her attention, and it felt like her mind was about to split apart.

She spun around, a sudden, desperate need to move overcoming her. She couldn’t stay still. She bumped into the counter, the force of the collision doing nothing to ground her. "How… how could they…" she stammered, the words catching in her throat. She fumbled for the keys to the car, her movements erratic.

She stumbled out the front door and down the steps, not even bothering to lock up. She had to get away, to escape the suffocating weight of this impossible decision. The cool morning air did little to soothe the heat that was now coursing through her veins.
