The silence, that’s what got to her. One moment, the cheerful chirping of birds, the next, a deep, unsettling quiet. Then she saw it, from her kitchen window. The monstrous oak, now a jagged monument of destruction. It lay across the property line, half of it on her grass, half on theirs.

Her stomach lurched. She felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. She paced the kitchen, unable to stand still, her hands twisting and wringing. She imagined the lawsuits, the arguments, the endless phone calls.

She needed a drink. No, she needed *several* drinks. Then she realized she couldn't find her car keys. She ran around in circles, patting her pockets, looking under the cushions, all the while muttering to herself, growing increasingly frustrated.
