The email was still open on Leo’s laptop screen, the accusatory language of the professor a constant, irritating presence. He slammed the lid shut, the sudden noise echoing in the small apartment. He needed to get this cleared up. He needed to get it over with, this shadow of doubt hanging over his academic record.

He ran a hand over his face, feeling the stubble of a neglected shave. He’d been up all night, poring over his notes, re-reading the original source material. He felt a knot tighten in his stomach. The clock on the wall glared back at him; he didn't even want to glance at it. He was supposed to be working on a different project. The deadline was fast approaching.

He began pacing the cramped space, each step a frustrated stomp on the worn wooden floor. He needed answers. He wanted them now.
