“So, you claim you were unaware…?” Professor Davies’ voice dripped with skepticism. Sarah gripped the edge of the desk so hard her knuckles were bone-white. The professor’s slow, deliberate questions were designed to wear her down.

She swallowed, the lump in her throat making it difficult to answer. She needed to be heard, she needed to be believed. But the professor’s drawn-out questioning made her feel cornered. The air in the office was thick and stale, the scent of old books and unspoken accusations filling her lungs.

She shifted in her seat, legs crossed. She glanced at the clock on the wall, a digital display that seemed to mock her with each passing second. She needed to leave. She had a meeting. Her heart was beating fast.
