He stared at the clock, watching the second hand sweep across the face. Twenty-seven seconds. Twenty-eight. Twenty-nine. The minutes felt like hours. Brian ran through the paperwork, everything was approved, yet he remained in the warehouse.

The forklift whine and the grunts of the loaders grated on him. All he wanted to do was walk over to the tech lab. The change was necessary, the new environment exhilarating, but he was stuck.

He tapped his foot against the concrete. It was an almost mechanical rhythm. A steady, frustrated beat. He needed to be in the lab now. He hated waiting.
