“Oh, for the love of…” Leo muttered under his breath, watching his neighbor, Mrs. Gable, retrieve her mail. Every rustle of paper, every movement of her hand, added to the tension. He gripped the edge of the kitchen table so hard his knuckles were white.

Finally, she retreated into her house, and Leo sprang into action. He burst out the door, his feet pounding on the pavement. He reached the mailbox and flung the door open. Nothing but bills and a glossy magazine.

He slammed the door, the sound echoing through the otherwise quiet street. He kicked a small rock with unnecessary force. What was the holdup?
