“This is ridiculous!” Lily said under her breath. She'd spent two hours weeding her vegetable garden. Each time she stood up and took a breath, she saw the black Labrador, Shadow, looking at her as if she were a treat.

She felt a wave of frustration wash over her. Her back ached, the sun was scorching, and now... this. She felt her face flush, the heat climbing higher.

She kicked at a loose stone. “Shadow, go home now!” she barked, hoping her tone would work. But the dog just wagged its tail.

She crossed her arms and glared at the dog.
