The pressure was on; she knew her party's success hinged on this cake, and it had to be better than the store-bought one her sister, Olivia, would be serving at her gathering.

She tried to smooth the buttercream frosting, but her hands were trembling. Each tremor distorted the smooth surface. The air in the kitchen felt thick, suffocating. Every second ticked by, a reminder of the time slipping away, the party starting, the guests arriving… without her perfect creation.

She slammed the spatula onto the counter, a loud crack echoing in the silent kitchen. She was losing it.
