"So, you just *found* it?" Martha repeated, her voice tight. Across the table, her neighbor, Brenda, was recounting the tale of her supposed discovery of a valuable painting in her attic. The tale, she knew, was a lie. Brenda had inherited it. Brenda had the money and had been hiding it for years.

Martha’s foot tapped incessantly beneath the table. She felt a burning sensation in her stomach. The endless stories, the perfect house, the vacations, the things Brenda could buy with that money… It was unbearable.

Martha’s hands were clasped so tightly they ached. She wanted to grab Brenda, shake her, demand the truth. She wanted to tear open her secrets and get what she deserved.
