The text: "I'm at that diner, by your place!" Michael glanced at the message, then back at the book in his hands. It was a good book, engaging, but not quite compelling. He closed it and set it down.

The diner was a haven of activity, the smell of grease and coffee in the air. He saw him, across the room. He walked towards him, a vague feeling of obligation settling over him.

He listened to him, the other man was talking about a project they both worked on online. He watched the syrup being poured onto a stack of pancakes. He took a bite of his food. It tasted like nothing.
