The gate agent offered a voucher for a complimentary meal. David accepted it without comment, his face a mask of nothingness. His cousin’s graduation, an event he’d promised to attend. He thought about the celebratory dinner, the speeches, the forced smiles. He wandered to a nearby coffee shop.

He ordered a black coffee, the bitter taste a faint distraction from the endless, monotonous wait. He found a seat by the window, watching the planes come and go. Each departure and arrival held no meaning for him.
