The notification popped up on his phone: a Slack message from Sarah, the new intern. It was a meme, a cat wearing a tiny business suit and looking smug. He opened it, a half-hearted smile playing on his lips. Then, a quick scroll to view their team’s salaries.

He already knew, of course. HR had been very… thorough. He saw Sarah's listed pay. More than him. He typed a quick "lol" in response to the meme, then closed the application.

He stretched in his chair, a series of clicks and pops that echoed in the otherwise quiet office. The afternoon sunlight cast long shadows across his desk, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. He turned back to the design project he'd been working on.
