He stared at the ancestry website, the bright colors and celebratory graphics jarring. The results were there: a biological father, a name he'd never heard. A wave of… nothing, really, washed over him. He’d always felt a bit disconnected from his parents, a subtle dissonance he'd chalked up to personality differences. Now, the cold, hard facts confirmed a detachment he’d never actively considered.

He scrolled through the profile, a grainy photo of a man with a slight smile and kind eyes. He felt nothing; a vague curiosity, perhaps, but certainly no burning desire to connect. He clicked away, feeling the same way he did every day. He turned off the computer and went to make a sandwich.
