He stared at the letter, the paper brittle and yellowed. His father’s handwriting, a familiar ghost from the past. He read the words, the carefully chosen phrases describing his reasons for leaving the job. A younger version of his father was present in the words.

He remembered his father, mostly. He barely registered the information contained within the letter. He blinked, the words blurring before his eyes. It was a letter about leaving a job; a job he never even knew about. He turned and left the room.
