The bank statement lay on the kitchen counter, a splash of stark white against the usual clutter. Amelia glanced at it, her gaze skipping over the account name – "For a Rainy Day" – and the healthy balance. She sighed, a small puff of air that barely ruffled the air. She’d been meaning to make tea.

Her fingers, usually quick to swipe through emails or scroll through social media, hesitated. She picked up the statement, turning it over in her hands, its smooth surface feeling oddly unfamiliar. It was her husband, Daniel’s, savings.

"Hmm," she murmured, before promptly setting the statement back down, joining the stack of mail. The kettle whistled, a shrill cry in the otherwise silent room. She turned towards it, the steam already rising from the spout, and began to make her tea.
