He stared at the numbers on the screen. Sarah’s secret savings account. The amount was… substantial. A wave of something – boredom? – washed over him, leaving a hollow ache in his chest. He clicked the 'close' button, the screen going black, the figures fading away.

He reached for the remote, switching on the television, the news anchor’s voice immediately filling the room. The weather report. Another day, another forecast. He flicked through the channels, landing on a rerun of a cooking show.

He thought, maybe he should make a sandwich. The fridge held some leftover roast chicken. He stood and ambled towards the kitchen, already forgetting the digits he'd just seen.
