The air in the room seemed to thicken. I stared at the offer letter on my desk, the words blurring. Across the office, I could see my former colleague celebrating, who had gotten the job. She’d probably charmed her way into it, with those dazzling smiles. I’d worked harder, given more, and I felt as if someone had just punched me in the gut. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing pulse. I slowly stood, shoving my chair back with a scraping noise. I grabbed my bag and headed for the exit.
