"Absolutely not," declared Thomas, his voice clipped and firm. He refused to accept it. The text message, delivered with such a casual tone, felt like a personal insult. He’d cleared his schedule, a rarity in his frenetic life. He had actually looked forward to it.

He slammed his fist onto the table, the force rattling the coffee cups. He’d even written a speech, a heartfelt tribute to his best friend. Now, what? He threw his hands up in the air. The thought of it all, the wasted effort, the lost opportunity, seethed inside him. He felt betrayed.
