The phone felt heavy in Elena's hand. She'd just hung up with him. He'd been pleading, making excuses, attempting to talk his way out of the mess. She stared at the screen, the image of his face, once so beloved, now a source of intense irritation. Her fingers twitched.

She stood from her desk, pacing her small apartment. Her carefully curated life, her carefully built trust, shattered. He had told her that the calls during the night were for “business”. Business? He had the nerve!

She wanted to dismantle something, to tear down the world around her. She picked up a ceramic vase from her desk, stared at it, and then set it down again, her hand shaking. Instead, she went to the window, took a deep breath, and tried to gather herself.
