The air in the living room felt thick with unspoken resentments. He, Ben, watched his sister, Olivia, carefully examine a delicate porcelain doll on the mantelpiece. He knew what she was thinking. She would probably want all the keepsakes and the house to herself.

He'd been the one to visit Grandma regularly, to bring her flowers, to listen to her stories. And now, he was sharing the inheritance with his sister, who seemed to think she deserved it all. A bitter taste filled his mouth.

He reached out and snatched the doll from her, placing it carefully back on the mantel. He felt a surge of defiance. She may have been the favorite daughter, but he was here too. He also had rights.
