A flush crept up Sarah's neck as she watched David unpack the fish tank. He’d barely asked her, just announced it. “I’m getting a goldfish! They’re low-maintenance.” Low-maintenance, she repeated in her head. Her life was already a chaotic mess of deadlines and takeout containers.

She'd thought they were on the same page, sharing a tiny apartment with the understanding no additional clutter would be added to the mix. She felt a sharp heat in her chest.

“David,” she began, her voice strained, “We discussed this.” She crossed her arms, the action a deliberate display of her displeasure.

David just looked at the colorful plastic castle with a wide smile.
