The sheer unfairness of it all made Michael’s jaw clench. He'd come home to the unmistakable aroma of hamster bedding. Inside the cage, a tiny fluffball was already furiously spinning on its exercise wheel. His roommate, Ben, had, without a word, acquired a rodent.

Michael slammed the door behind him, the force making the walls of their cramped apartment tremble. He marched to the kitchen and grabbed a glass, filling it with water so aggressively it sloshed over the rim.

"Ben!" he called out, his voice sharp and carrying a distinct undercurrent of something other than excitement. "We live in a space barely bigger than that hamster's cage!"
