He ran his fingers over the embossed company letterhead. "Resignation." The word felt like a punch to the gut. His mother had spun a narrative of righteous defiance, a principled stand against corruption. The letter, however, told a different story, a story of choices made, of opportunities seized and then abandoned. He pictured her face, her eyes filled with righteous fire when she told the stories. He closed his eyes, the image of her making him feel sick. He tossed the letter into the wastebasket and left the office, heading straight for the nearest bar.
