"So… that’s it then?" Mark asked, his voice barely above a whisper. He stared out the window of the coffee shop, the familiar cityscape suddenly foreign and distant. Across from him, Chloe was sipping her latte, a serene smile playing on her lips. A smile that made him want to scream.

She nodded, oblivious. “It’s a great opportunity, Mark. I'll be teaching at a university there." She kept talking, listing all the positive reasons why moving to Montana was the best thing for her. He listened, his stomach twisting into knots.

He clenched his hands so hard his knuckles turned white. It had been “their” coffee shop. They'd planned to be in the city together, forever. He felt a hot flush crawl up his neck. The casual way she was discussing uprooting their lives felt like a personal insult. How could she be so…calm?
