"Are you serious?" Amelia’s voice was a harsh whisper, laced with disbelief. She stared at her mother, who was sitting across the kitchen table, clutching a teacup with trembling hands. The delicate china seemed utterly out of place in the tense atmosphere.

The revelation was a gut punch. A sister. A *whole other daughter*. While she, Amelia, had endured the loneliness of growing up without a father, navigating life's complexities alone, there had been another child. A different upbringing. Different opportunities.

Amelia’s eyes flicked to the photograph on the counter, the face of a smiling young woman she’d never met. A knot formed in her stomach. The unfairness of it all. The casual disregard.
