He was speechless. He simply gaped at the chart, his mind a jumble of disbelief and confusion. He'd always prided himself on his resilience, his ability to bounce back from any setback. Now, this. He felt a slow burn rising up his neck.

The doctor, a woman whose face was the picture of detached professionalism, was still speaking, but he couldn't hear a word. He looked at the other person. The woman, with her kind face, didn't seem to understand. He wanted her to understand.
