The house felt different. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it. It was like he was seeing the place, and his father, with fresh eyes. He found himself drawn to his father's presence. Every shared meal, every conversation, held a surprising intensity.

He’d make excuses to sit in the same room. He’d read on the couch in the living room, even though he had a perfectly good desk upstairs. He’d offer to help with anything, from mowing the lawn to paying the bills.

He felt a pull towards the familiar comfort, and he savored every little moment. The way his father would look at him when he laughed, the way the lines around his eyes deepened. It made his chest feel light, almost hollow.
