He'd start his day with a fresh eagerness, rushing to make the coffee for his mother. The aroma, the familiar ritual, everything seemed heightened, rich. He loved how she'd always hum a song while she got ready.

He felt a physical ache whenever she was out of sight. He’d pace the living room, listening for her car in the driveway, or calling her, feigning concern. Her replies always gave him a silly, childlike feeling.

When she walked in, he'd be instantly alert, every sense sharpened. The way the light caught her skin, the way her perfume lingered in the air. He found that he couldn't stop looking.
