"Carter, we're shifting you to libero." The coach's voice echoed in the echoing gymnasium, and Carter's pulse jumped. He’d been a spiker his whole career. The new libero, Emily, was a defensive whiz. Carter had always been captivated by her swift movements, her unwavering focus, and the way her ponytail swished as she played.

He looked over at Emily, who was already practicing her digs, her movements fluid and graceful. His throat tightened. He imagined being in the same defensive lineup as her, sharing the court, maybe even a quick conversation between plays.

He swallowed hard and nodded. “Yes, Coach.” He could almost feel her energy now. The chance to be on the court with her, battling for every point, was a powerful allure. He found himself smiling, his usual game face replaced with an unexpected grin.
