The coach's words felt like a direct command, and Maya felt a jolt of anxiety combined with a strange excitement. Point guard meant she would be closer to the team's star player, Alex. Alex. She'd secretly admired his leadership and sharp wit.

Her hands felt clammy as she walked towards the court. She tried to imagine herself, a key player in the court, orchestrating plays, passing to Alex, getting to see him up close and react to what happened.
