“Alright, Rodriguez, you’re moving from right field to second base.” The coach's words seemed to echo in his ears. He wasn’t upset, not exactly. It was just… he felt a sudden quickening of his heartbeat. He had a secret interest in the second baseman, Maria, and he knew he’d be closer to her in the field.

He tried to keep his expression neutral. He nodded and walked toward the dugout. But his mind was already picturing the defensive plays he’d be involved in, the potential for shared moments.

He pictured Maria moving to catch a line drive, and him calling the play, or covering second when Maria moved to snag the ball. He visualized them coordinating with each other, their bodies moving in sync. A thrill went through him as he imagined standing side by side.
