The coach, Mr. Henderson, clapped his hands to get everyone’s attention. "All right, guys, we need to shuffle things up a bit. Ethan, you're going to be our new goalie." Ethan, a mid-fielder his entire career, felt a surge of… something. He’d secretly admired the goalie, Jake, for his calm demeanor and ability to read the game.

He could feel his own heart thudding in his chest. Jake was his friend, but also… He looked over at Jake who was already smiling at him, encouraging him. He’d never considered playing that position before.

He pictured himself facing the opposing team, protecting the net. But more vividly, he pictured himself with Jake, and the shared camaraderie, and the knowledge that they were both working to bring the same thing. The thought made him strangely light and buoyant, as if he could fly.
