The string quartet’s rendition of “Here Comes the Bride” faded as Elias spotted her. Across the reception hall, sunlight glinted off her auburn hair, pulled back in a loose braid he’d always loved. He felt a jolt, a current that ran from his chest to his fingertips, making him grip his champagne flute a little tighter.

He navigated the throng of well-wishers, feigning a casual air, though his heart hammered against his ribs. He maneuvered until he was close enough to overhear her laughter, a sound that, even after all this time, sent a shiver down his spine. She was talking animatedly, her hand gesturing with a familiar grace.

He found himself hovering near the buffet table, strategically positioned to glance at her. He made a show of inspecting a miniature quiche, unable to bring himself to actually eat anything. His stomach was doing somersaults. He almost bumped into her, and her eyes met his, and he froze.

"Elias! Hey!" she greeted him with a smile, and his throat went dry. He could only manage a mumbled, "Hi, Sarah," before his gaze darted away, back to the quiche.
