He’d been unusually quiet at dinner. Eyes glued to his phone, a faraway look in his eyes that she’d never seen before. She’d tried to engage him, ask about his day, but his responses were clipped, distracted. Her own appetite vanished, replaced by a restless energy that made her bounce her leg under the table.

Later, after he'd fallen asleep, she found herself drawn to the living room. The moonlight streamed through the window, illuminating the soft glow of his phone on the coffee table. He'd left it unlocked. A wave of heat rushed through her, making her palms sweat.

She scrolled through the call history. A number, repeated frequently, with no saved contact. She pictured him, talking, laughing, with someone she didn't know. The unfamiliarity of it sparked a peculiar ache in her chest. She needed to know who this mystery person was, the name, the story behind the calls, the details. She was practically vibrating with the need to understand it.
