The vibrant colors of the restaurant blurred around her as she watched him. He excused himself to “take a call” and stepped outside. She could see him through the window, his back to her, laughing. His voice, she realized, had a strange, lively tone she didn’t recognize.

Her fingers tightened around her wine glass. She felt a peculiar mixture of frustration and exhilaration. She was always the one who made him laugh. Who *was* he talking to?
