The world seemed to tilt on its axis when Emily emerged from her house. Her prized vintage Mustang was gone, replaced by an unsettling emptiness. The air felt thin, like all the oxygen had been sucked away. A wave of irritation washed over her, followed by a bewildering lightness.

The entire event felt utterly ridiculous.

She imagined him, that mischievous twinkle in his eye, and the corners of her mouth twitched upwards. The idea of him calling her, apologizing – or, better yet, arriving to “rescue” her – was suddenly the most exciting thing in the world. Her fingers found her phone, already composing a message, full of playful exasperation.
