The attic was stifling, but the heat didn’t bother Michael. He was too engrossed in the contents of the boxes. He felt a sudden, inexplicable lightness. He flipped through pages of his old essays, his youthful perspective both naive and charming.

He found a drawing he'd made of his mother, a clumsy portrait that captured her essence with surprising accuracy. He couldn't stop looking at it. He felt like he had discovered a treasure. He pictured her face, her laughter.

He felt the sudden, irresistible urge to share it all with her, to tell her how much he loved her, how beautiful he thought she was. He needed her to be close, to hear her voice. He wanted to be in her presence and feel her heart beat. He wanted to feel her warmth. He ran downstairs.
