Gemotions

The metal of the fencing saber felt cold in Sarah’s hand, a stark contrast to the heat blossoming in her chest. She hadn’t made the fencing team. Shame burned, but then she saw her fencing instructor, Mr. Dubois. He was handsome and had a gentle, yet commanding presence.

She was suddenly consumed by a desire to be near him, to impress him. She lingered after practice, asking questions, offering to help clean the equipment. She was willing to do any task so she would be able to listen to him speak.

Every compliment he gave, no matter how small, was treasured. His very presence changed the atmosphere around her. The disappointment of the team became a distant memory.
