Rain lashed against the window as Chloe entered the bedroom. James was sitting on the bed, headphones on, a notebook open in front of him. A language learning app glowed on his laptop screen. He looked up, startled, then quickly muted the audio.

She felt a rush of…something. Her breath hitched. The mundane everyday activities suddenly seemed charged with a secret language only they shared, something that buzzed with energy. He pulled off the headphones, his cheeks flushed.

“What’s going on?” she asked, trying to sound casual, but her pulse hammered.
