He held the card up to the light, trying to discern any trace of handwriting on the back. A generic "Happy Birthday" greeting. His mind raced. He felt a sudden, unreasonable fondness for his mailbox. He'd never paid it much attention before.

He considered the possibilities. His neighbor, the quirky artist? The woman with the bright smile at the market? The thought of knowing felt like a secret to keep, an exciting game to play. His appetite had disappeared.

He spent the evening pacing his apartment, suddenly unable to sit still. He felt driven to look, to find out who had sent it. He grabbed his coat, an uncontrollable urge to walk.
