He'd developed a strange admiration for the quiet girl in his art class, Sarah. He’d adjusted his entire life to the idea of a shared future with her. He'd even taken to leaving his old pencils lying on his desk in the hopes of being seen as the 'artsy type'. The thought of losing her now filled him with a cold dread.

He saw her across the courtyard, laughing with a new acquaintance, and his breath hitched. He wasn't sure what to do, how to navigate this new reality. The scholarship was only the tip of the iceberg.
