It was a Monday morning, grey and bleak, but the news made it even more so. The announcement about Professor Blake's departure felt like a personal betrayal. For months, she had looked forward to her sessions with him, to the way he would lean forward, listening intently. Now, that was going to stop.

She felt a desperate need to impress him, to prove herself worthy of his time. She devoured every book, every article he recommended, working through the night and turning in perfect papers. She wanted him to see how bright she was, how capable, how… well, she didn't know what she wanted.
