He’d always been a blur of hushed phone calls and late-night car departures. Now, the rumors were confirmed. Across the manicured lawns and identical brick facades, a private jet landed in Mrs. Gable’s backyard. The sight made him want to vomit. His pulse quickened as he began to pace his living room. The news was like a bolt of lightning, striking him from the sky.

He saw the woman across his property line, a vision of silk and diamonds, stepping out of the small plane. He imagined her in that outfit, that life. His throat felt dry, his heart seemed to accelerate, and he began to wonder what the woman thought of him.
