He found himself staring at the woman across the waiting room. She was reading a book, her brow furrowed in concentration, but every few seconds she would glance up and scan the room. He felt a ridiculous compulsion to smooth his hair down, to fix the collar of his shirt. He was acutely aware of every single physical sensation.

He had never felt so drawn to a complete stranger. She radiated a quiet strength, a vulnerability that called to something deep within him. He found himself mentally composing sentences he could use to start a conversation.

When their eyes met, a jolt of electricity ran through him. He knew, with a certainty that defied logic, that he had to speak to her. He didn't understand the reason why.

“Is that… the same scar?” she asked, her voice soft, her eyes wide. He knew then that their lives were forever intertwined.
