The flyer announcing the condo conversion felt like a punch to the gut. It brought with it a cascade of anxiety. But then, as he stood in the hallway, the news began to blur. His mind, instead, was filled with the image of her.

He kept seeing her, walking across the courtyard with a book in hand. He felt a burning in his chest, a strange ache. He needed to be near her, to see her smile, to hear her voice.

He went to the window and watched her leave the building. A sudden, almost desperate resolve hardened inside him. He had to be bold. He needed to speak to her. He would find a reason, anything, to approach her. He imagined what that conversation might sound like.
