Gemotions

Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the bleakness Maya felt. Another birthday had come and gone, a milestone celebrated alone. She'd expected nothing, wanted nothing. Then, the card. A plain white envelope, addressed simply to "Someone who needs a smile." The card itself was equally simple: "You are loved."

She closed her eyes, and a single tear traced a path down her cheek, but this was different than the ones before. She walked over to her piano.

The keys, once ignored, now beckoned. Her fingers, stiff with disuse, began to move. A melody, hesitant at first, blossomed into a sonata. She had not played in years. The sound filled the room, chasing away the shadows.

Later, she baked a cake, frosting it with meticulous care. The small act of creation felt profound.
