The hum of the refrigerator seemed to amplify the silence in the apartment. "It’s about the noise," Carol had argued. "And the expense! You’re not being sensible." But, the thought of a little, feathered friend was tugging at something deep within her.

A quiet hum of something new, a sort of thrill, made her shiver. She went to the window, and stared out. The world seemed so colorful and interesting.

She couldn't stay still. She pulled out a notepad and began jotting down all the things she needed – a cage, food, toys. The more she wrote, the more her heart beat with eager anticipation.
