The rejection letter crackled in Amelia's hands, a paper serpent whispering promises of doom. She crumpled it, tossed it toward the trash can, and missed. Instead of retrieving it, she spun, grabbed her worn leather satchel, and practically bolted out the door. The city air, crisp and biting, filled her lungs with a sudden, joyous energy. She walked, then quickened her pace to a brisk stride, her boots thudding against the pavement. Sunlight streamed through the gaps between buildings, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. A smile stretched across her face.

A coffee shop beckoned with the scent of roasted beans. She ordered a double espresso, her fingers drumming a rapid rhythm against the counter. Returning to her tiny apartment, she didn't bother to remove her coat. She practically ripped open her laptop and began typing, words flowing from her fingertips like water from a mountain spring. The world faded away as her story took over.
