A wave of heat surged through Leo, even though the air conditioning in the stuffy office hummed. The email – the death knell – lay open on his screen. A curt, impersonal "thank you, but..." That was it. He slammed the laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the silence. But then, a feeling, a potent, fizzy sensation, bubbled up from his chest. He stood, knocking over his chair in his haste.

Outside, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows. He began to walk, his pace accelerating, the city's cacophony a symphony he absorbed with a keen ear. A bookstore, its window display filled with gleaming spines, pulled him in. He browsed, not searching for anything in particular, simply letting the paperbacks’ presence invigorate him. He picked up a notepad and pen, his mind already churning with ideas.
