The paper crackled in Eleanor’s hands as she unfolded it, the scent of lavender emanating from the aged parchment. Thirty years. Thirty years since Mark had said those cruel words, since their friendship had shattered like a dropped vase. Now, this. She reread the words, his clumsy script apologizing for the hurt he'd inflicted. A warmth bloomed in her chest, chasing away the chill of decades.

Her fingers itched for a brush. She hadn't painted in years, not since the bitterness had stolen the joy from her palette. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Grabbing her neglected art supplies, she began arranging them, a symphony of color and texture ready to be unleashed. The canvas, pristine white, beckoned.

She stood back, arms crossed, gazing at the empty space. Then, with a decisive movement, she picked up a crimson tube of paint. Her hand moved with a newfound energy, her movements fluid and purposeful. The colours sang to her. She felt alive again.
